Tropical Storm Watches Issued For Hawaii

A Tropical Storm Watch for four Hawaiian counties has been issued by the National Weather Service.

The storm is currently forecast to hit land in the Hawaiian Islands as early as Thursday afternoon through late Friday with the possibility of flash flooding, high winds and coastal inundation.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, issued updated advisories on Hurricane Iselle and Hurricane Genevieve at 8 a.m. HST on Wednesday. Hurricane Iselle was located 602 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, at the time of the advisory. Hurricane Genevieve was situated 1,140 miles west-southwest of Lihu, Hawaii, at the time of the announcement.

At press time, Hawaii County was under a hurricane warning and a flash flood watch, Honolulu County was under a tropical storm watch and a flash flood watch, Kauai County was under a flash flood watch, and Maui County was under a tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch.

The National Weather Service has placed several areas under Tropical Storm Watch, including Big Island Interior; Big Island North and East; Big Island Summit; Kohala; Kona; South Big Island; Central Oahu; Oahu Koolau; Oahu North Shore; Oahu South Shore; Olomana; Waianae Coast; Waianae Mountains; Haleakala Summit; Kahoolawe; Lanai Makai; Lanai Mauka; Leeward Haleakala; Maui Central Valley; Maui Leeward West; Maui Windward West; Molokai Leeward; Molokai Windward and Windward Haleakala.

The National Weather Service has also placed several areas under Flash Flood Watch, including Big Island Interior; Big Island North and East; Big Island Summit; Central Oahu; Haleakala Summit; Kahoolawe; Kauai Leeward; Kauai Mountains; Kauai Windward; Kohala; Kona; Lanai Makai; Lanai Mauka; Leeward Haleakala; Maui Central Valley; Maui Leeward West; Maui Windward West; Molokai Leeward; Molokai Windward; Niihau; Oahu Koolau; Oahu North Shore; Oahu South Shore; Olomana; South Big Island; Waianae Coast; Waianae Mountains; Windward Haleakala.

The National Weather Service, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center and the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency will continue to provide updates as they become available. The Hawaii Tourism Authority will continue to monitor updates.

Note: Due to the tropical storm warning, the HTA has rescheduled the Product Enrichment Program (PEP) and Signature Events program informational sessions on Hawaii Island, which were slated for this Thursday. The sessions on Hilo and Kona have been rescheduled for next Thursday, Aug. 14. The Oahu and Lanai sessions will be postponed to a later date yet to be determined.
