A Delta Air Lines flight collided with an American Airlines aircraft on the taxiway at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport Tuesday night, according to CBS News.

No injuries were reported but the aircraft involved sustained significant damage.

The Delta Boeing 737's left winglet struck the right horizontal stabilizer on the tail of the American Boeing 757, which was stationary at the time, according to an American spokesman.

"We had a big jolt, and he has a big scrape on his left wing," the pilot of the American flight was heard telling air traffic control over the radio via Forbes. "The Delta at our three o'clock, we are pretty sure his winglet, ran into us as he passed behind us."

Both airlines confirmed the incident occurred but weren't able to offer much detail as an investigation is likely.

"While on taxi, the wing of flight 2503 came in contact with the tail of another aircraft," Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton said in a statement. "We're sorry for the inconvenience to our customers."

Both planes were returned to their respective gates so passengers could deplane. The incident prompted a delay of about six hours for passengers on both flights. New aircraft were eventually brought in to operate the American flight to Dublin and the Delta flight to Seattle.

Citing an airline mechanic who examined photos of the damage, Forbes reported the American plane could be out of service for as long as a week. However, the Delta aircraft is likely to require less work.

Tuesday's collision comes less than two months after two planes clipped wings at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and six months after a pair of planes collided at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, causing a fuel leak.
