Cabarete: An Active Beach Lover’s Dream Destination

Cabarete: An Active Beach Lover’s Dream Destination

We'll admit that there was relatively little planning — and therefore next to no expectations — for our five-year anniversary trip to the Dominican Republic. We had just returned from a three-week whirlwind trip around Thailand, and as a result, we weren’t even all that excited to hop on another plane and deal with travel logistics.

But of course, as it would turn out, we fell absolutely in love with the Dominican Republic from our very first day in the country. Specifically, the small beach town of Cabarete completely stole our hearts.

Unlike the famous resort towns of Puerto Plata and Punta Cana, we found Cabarete to be the perfect spot where adventure and comfort effortlessly come together. This isn’t a place where you while the day away in your all-inclusive — and in our books, that’s a good thing. Here are five reasons why Cabarete is perfect for any fellow stylish adventure travelers:

    Beach Activities

Cabarete and the surrounding region boast multiple beaches, each suited for different action sports. Here you can try a bit of everything; surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand up paddle- boarding, scuba diving... the list goes on and on. Whether you're looking to try a new watersport or you already have a favorite, chances are you'll be able to find it in Cabarete.

We took an afternoon to try our luck at windsurfing at Cabarete Beach and had an absolute blast. The great thing about windsurfing is that it only took about 30 minutes of technical explanation before we were in the water on the board and cruising around the bay. Next time we stay longer, we would love to take a three-day course on kitesurfing.

    Laid-back Luxury

While we love a sense of excitement and adrenaline during the day, there is nothing better than coming home after hours in the sun to a fabulous hotel. We stayed in Casa Veintiuno in Sosua, just about ten minutes down the road from Cabarete. This unpretentious boutique B&B is run by the delightful Belgian couple Marc and Saskia. With only three rooms, the attention to detail and personal touches were five-star all the way.

    Day Trips

Cabarete’s unique location puts it right in the middle of the action. There are multiple spots you can hit all along the North Coast that are within a two-hour drive. We recommend starting at the crystal clear Dudu Cenote. For the bold there is a zip line that runs from the edge of the cenote’s walls out over the water where you drop around 30 feet into the clear water below.

Stop number two is Diamante Beach. We were amazed to find this small bay empty, save for an old fishing boat and some locals sitting around a small wooden shack that sells beers and snacks.

Next, make your way to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres just outside Puerto Plata. You can either drive or take the more scenic gondola ride. At the top, you'll find a Christ the Redeemer statue, some walking trails as well as great views looking out over the surrounding landscape. Finish your day off on your way back to Cabarete with a sunset stroll on Playa Linda, a less frequented beach in neighboring Sosua.

    International Cuisine

You'll find loads of great international options in Cabarete and the surrounding towns. We had some of the best Italian food we've had outside of Italy at Osteria Toscana in Sosua. Casa Veintiuno also has a fabulous restaurant serving up a variety of international flavors; the lamb was my personal favorite.

Closer to the heart of Cabarete, you'll want to try Yalla. Known for its fantastic tapas, this is a great stop for lunch. If you're looking for a classy night out with gourmet cuisine, head to Bliss Restaurant Lounge.

    Friendly Locals

I'm not sure that we have ever visited a place where smiles come as effortlessly as in Cabarete. Whether it's asking help with directions or chatting it up with your neighbor at the beach, the infectious Dominican fun loving spirit is always in the air.

Have you ever been to Cabarete? What did you think?
