Top Cruises With Extended Stays in Port

Top Cruises With Extended Stays in Port

For many passengers, it seems like there’s never enough time in port. Lately, more cruise lines are adding overnight stays, evenings in port and even new night excursions. Here are seven options for travelers who want to linger longer on land.

    Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara specializes in night programs called “AzAmazing Evenings.” Guests can attend events like a live Italian opera or enjoy a romantic evening at a local restaurant. There are also night tours to landmarks or after-hours museum visits.

Cruises often include more than one overnight, like the 11-night, “Classic Mediterranean Voyage” on the Azamara Journey, which has an overnight in Dubrovnik and Barcelona. During the 15-night “Spices, Tea and Rubber Trees” cruise from Dubai, the Azamara Quest overnights in Colombo (Sri Lanka) and in Singapore.

    Alaskan Marine Highway

Although not an official cruise, the Alaskan Marine Highway offers basic cabins on overnight voyages between Bellingham, Washington and the Aleutian Islands with numerous stops along the coast. To really experience the highway, bring a tent and grab a spot in the solarium for some outstanding views of the landscape. The Inside Passage route is similar to that of mainstream cruises, however guests can hop off in port, stay a few nights, and catch another ferry.

    Bermuda Cruises

For East Coast dwellers, a cruise to Bermuda offers a convenient slice of beaches and island vibes. Most major cruise lines offer departures from Boston, New York, Charleston, Baltimore, Bayonne, and Norfolk to King’s Wharf, Hamilton or St. George’s — the three major ports of call on the island. Most cruises visit Bermuda between April and October.

    Celebrity’s New Overnights

In 2016, Celebrity Cruises will be offering 43 cruise vacations in the Caribbean with overnight stays sprinkled into itineraries. On the Eclipse and Equinox, passengers will have added time in ports like Phillipsburg, St. Maarten; Cartagena, Colombia; Bridgetown, Barbados, Oranjestad, Aruba; and Williamstad, Curacao.

    Windstar Cruises

It is fairly common to spend the night in a Windstar destination, so guests of the tall sailing ships can truly immerse themselves in shore experiences. The Wind Surf’s 11-night “Scandinavian Tapestry” includes an overnight in Copenhagen and in Stockholm as well as a late night port visit to Warnemunde, Germany. On the “Yachtsman’s Caribbean” cruise, the Wind Surf stays overnight in Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands.

    Princess Adds Shore Time

Princess has been focusing on additional port time with the “More Ashore!” program that includes a series of late night stops with evening departures in locations like Juneau, Alaska; Santorini, Greece; and Dublin, Ireland — to name a few.

The company will be adding several overnight stays as well. Ruby Princess sails on a five-night “Baja Peninsula Getaway,” with an overnight in Cabo San Lucas, and the Caribbean Princess makes an overnight stop in Quebec City on the 10-night, “Classic Canada and New England” cruise with three available departure dates.

    Cunard’s Lesser-Known Overnights

Although it takes some searching, Cunard has quite a few overnight stops and late nights among the company’s vessels. Queen Victoria is offering a seven-night  “Rome to Venice” itinerary that includes an overnight in Venice and evenings in Trieste and Kotor. Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona and Monte Carlo also show up as extended stays on the ship’s itineraries.

Queen Elizabeth, meanwhile, has an overnight in Amsterdam on its five-night sailing from Southampton, and an overnight in St. Petersburg on its nine-night cruise from Hamburg. Madeira, Athens, Barcelona, Liverpool and Quebec also see the ship hanging around for a while when calling, depending on the cruise.

    Crystal Cruises

Crystal has been increasing the number of overnight options, particularly at embarkation ports. On Alaska cruises, passengers will have extra time in Vancouver, on British Isles cruises they’ll encounter overnights in London, Dublin and Edinburgh, and on cruises to Australia they can stay overnight in Sydney and Bali.
