Live the Raramuri Culture in Chihuahua
5/11In the state of Chihuahua, Creel is the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara; this place is the gateway to a garden of natural beauties, among forests, rocks, caves, the spectacular Copper Canyon, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, in addition to the missions and traditions of the Tarahumara or Rarámuri culture. It is also the passage of the Chihuahua Pacífico train, better known as Chepe.
Creel is located 247 kilometers southeast of the city of Chihuahua, on the upper reaches of the Sierra Madre Occidental, known as the Sierra Tarahumara. If you want to immerse in the Rarámuri culture, you can visit San Ignacio Arareko. At 8 kilometers from Creel is the nearest Rarámuri town.
The most traditional Rarámuri craft is basketry, especially wares -baskets woven with palmillas. But recently, Rarámuris have dabbled with great expertise in carved wood products, decorative objects and furniture; clay objects and wool articles. You can find these pieces in the Museum or House of Handicrafts. Counseled by Italian schools, the Rarámuri also begin to produce violins of extraordinary quality.
