The World's Most Dangerous Destinations

Travelers have a plethora of exciting and safe destinations to choose from when it comes to summer vacation.

However, some places around the world are effectively off-limits to globetrotters due to dangerous situations and the potential for serious threats.

Here are some of the world's most dangerous countries, according to the latest U.S. State Department guidance.

The State Department reissued its Level 4 travel advisory for Venezuela in May, reminding travelers to avoid the South American country due to multiple threats, including crime, civil unrest, kidnapping, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws. Officials also advise Americans to reconsider travel due to wrongful detentions, terrorism and poor health infrastructure.

Americans are advised to avoid travel to Iraq due to terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest and Mission Iraq’s limited capacity to provide support to U.S. citizens.

"U.S. citizens in Iraq face high risks to their safety and security, including the potential for violence and kidnapping. Terrorist and insurgent groups regularly attack Iraqi security forces and civilians. Anti-U.S. militias threaten U.S. citizens and international companies throughout Iraq," the State Department warns.

A European destination certainly worth visiting, Ukraine has been a no-go for many travelers in recent years due to Russia's ongoing war against the country. The strong threat of military attacks, crime and civil unrest means Americans should continue to avoid Ukraine.

Despite the recent reopening of its primary airport, Haiti remains a dangerous Level 4 destination as a result of debilitating gang violence that's resulted in an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Caribbean country.

Officials advise Americans to avoid travel to Russia due to the "unpredictable consequences of the unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces" in addition to the potential for harassment and the singling out of U.S. citizens for detention by Russian government security officials.

The State Department also warns of limited flights into and out of Russia and the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in the country.

Syria has experienced a decade-plus of armed conflict and should be avoided due to  terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, risk of unjust detention and the aforementioned armed conflict.

The U.S. Embassy in Damascus suspended its operations as far back as February 2012 and, as a result, the U.S. government is unable to provide any emergency services to U.S. citizens in the Middle Eastern country.

North Korea is off-limits to American travelers due to the risk of arrest and long-term detention of U.S. nationals. According to the State Department, "all U.S. passports are invalid for travel to, in, or through the country unless specially validated for such travel under the authority of the Secretary of State."

In Africa, both Sudan and South Sudan receive Level 4 travel advisories from the State Department. Americans are asked to not travel to Sudan due to armed conflict, civil unrest, crime, terrorism and kidnapping while similar threats exist in South Sudan, including crime, kidnapping and armed conflict.

"Do not travel to Myanmar due to civil unrest, armed conflict and arbitrary enforcement of local laws," the State Department warns.

Formerly known as Burma, Myanmar continues to be engaged in a brutal civil war that makes the Southeast Asian country a dangerous destination.

The East African nation of Somalia is not safe for travelers as of 2024. Officials warn of several potential threats, including crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health issues, kidnapping and piracy.
