Where Europe's Top 10 Cities Rank for Accessibility

Which of Europe's most-visited cities is the most accessible? The answer may surprise you. Discount travel website Alpharooms has crunched the numbers, comparing public transportation, top tourist attractions (Alpharooms studied 15 attractions within each city based on assistance available, adaptive toilets, descriptive tours, wheelchair accessibility and on-site parking) and hotels (Alpharooms studied the top five hotels within each city based on Tripadvisor) in 10 of Europe's most popular cities to determine how they stack up when it comes to accommodating wheelchairs and disabled travelers.

Paris has significant progress to make when it comes to improving accessibility. The city comes in last place among the 10 cities that Alpharooms analyzed for accessible public transportation. Only 22 percent of stations (65 out of 302) are completely accessible to all. The City of Light's hotels and top tourist attractions have work to do as well, ranking seventh and eighth, respectively.

Alpharooms found that Prague's most coveted landmarks and museums are the least accessible of the 10 most visited cities in Europe as many lack wheelchair access and on-site or nearby parking. The city also rounds out the list for accessible hotels.

Rome ranks eighth out of 10 cities for overall accessibility. The city's tourist attractions fared the best, ranking seventh, while its public transportation and hotels came in eighth and ninth, respectively.

Barcelona places third for accessibility of public transportation but takes a hit for placing second-to-last for the accessibility of its tourist attractions. Alpharooms points out that historical landmarks here like La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell have yet to be updated.

Milan doesn't fare worse than sixth in any of the three categories Alpharooms considered, placing third for hotels, fifth for public transportation and sixth for accessibility of tourist attractions, beating out Rome in each area.

Amsterdam's top tourist attractions fare well in terms of accessibility. However, the city's public transportation and top hotels are below average among the 10 cities analyzed, according to Alpharooms' research. The Dutch capital ranks seventh and eighth for public transportation and accommodations, respectively.

London ranks first in terms of accessible tourist attractions and hotels. Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London are the most accessible attractions in the city. However, London fares a disappointing ninth for public transportation due to its outdated metro stations.

Berlin didn't finish tops in any one category but ranks third overall for its consistency across the board, ranking second, fourth and fifth in terms of accessibility of hotels, public transportation and tourist attractions, respectively.

Vienna finished second for public transportation and overall accessibility. Alpharooms found that more than 95 percent of the city's U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations are completely accessible. Iconic attractions such as The Hofburg and Schonbrunn Palace and Gardens are also totally accessible.

The Irish capital is the most accessible European city overall, ranking number one for public transportation, second for tourist attractions and fourth for hotels. The award-winning Guinness Storehouse was found to be one of the most accessible attractions anywhere on the continent.
