The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) has launched its first-ever mentorship program. The new pilot program announced Thursday is designed for travel advisors seeking expert advice and guidance from seasoned mentors already established in the travel industry. During the six-month initiative, 10 mentees will be matched with 10 mentors for a guided career development experience that will enhance their skills, professionalism and industry comprehension. The personalized one-on-one program will allow mentors to share their industry knowledge, provide essential feedback, celebrate successes and open doors for networking and career-building opportunities, ASTA said."When I think back on my career, the people who took the time to mentor me made an enormous difference in my career trajectory, in my personal knowledge, and in my ability as a leader," ASTA President and CEO Zane Kerby said in a statement."I’m thrilled this is happening under ASTA’s banner with our new mentorship program and I can’t think of anything more important for a trade association to do than to help people who are just starting out in the business," he added."There’s a dramatic need for mentorship in our industry. We are the beneficiaries of the human desire to go and see. Customer expectations are not getting any lower. We survive because the knowledge that a travel advisor has is deemed valuable by the traveling customers. That is what we’re doing with our mentorship program, we’re increasing and expanding our knowledge base."
