Several major airlines are suspending service to Mexico's Tulum International Airport amid decreased demand for the popular tourist destination this fall.
Aeromexico and Volaris have announced plans to halt flights into and out of the Quintana Roo airport, which opened as recently as December 2023, citing unfavorable market conditions.
"We are implementing a temporary suspension. September 30 will be the last day. Operations are being suspended due to market conditions and to maximize our route network," Aeromexico said in a statement last month.
"We have had to review the profitability of our routes and temporarily suspend certain flights with lower load factors, including our operations to and from Tulum starting January 7, 2027," Volaris confirmed to Riviera Maya News.
"Consequently, we will stop selling tickets for flights after that date this weekend," the Mexico City-based carrier added.
Tulum Airport is about a two-hour drive from the much busier Cancun International Airport and will now see fewer flight options for tourists who have been turned off to the destination by rising costs and scams.
Mexican officials are currently working to address the destination's tourism future with hopes of resolving the latest issues.
