Air Canada is eliminating flights to several U.S. cities including in Florida, a destination historically popular with Canadians seeking to escape the winter cold.
The Points Guy has reported that the carrier filed plans to cut flights from:
- Vancouver International Airport (YVR), British Columbia to Tampa International Airport (TPA)
- Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Dulles International Airport (IAD)
- Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)
- Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP)
- Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) to Indianapolis International Airport (IND)
This information first appeared in Cirium and was later confirmed by an Air Canada spokesperson, per TPG.
All of the routes being impacted by the cuts will stop operating over the next few months and none of them will be available this winter.
Though the carrier did not comment on the cause for these particular route eliminations, they follow a recent trend of Canadians avoiding U.S. travel in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs and talk of annexing Canada.
"We saw a big shift in travel demand away from U.S. leisure destinations," Mark Galardo, Air Canada's chief commercial officer, explained during the carrier’s first quarter earnings call. His comments were part of a broader explanation about recent developments in transborder demand.
The airline has said it is keeping an eye on macro trends with regard to evolving traveler demand.
Additionally, the carrier intends to restart some of the newly axed routes in May 2026, according to TPG. Those include YUL-DTW, YUL-MSP and YYZ-IND flights. The YVR-IAD route is not among those currently slated to be restarted.
Separately, Air Canada has been busy expanding routes to other parts of the world. For summer 2025, the Canadian carrier is transforming travel between North America and Europe, offering travelers unprecedented connectivity. That development includes the airline introducing new routes and expanding its
existing network.
