In the midst of celebrating its centennial, American Airlines is now saying that Summer 2026 will be a record-breaking travel season.
American defines this period as going from May 21 through September 8, and the airline is expecting 75 million passengers on 750,000 flights. This would break the previous record, which was set in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic drastically altered the travel industry.
Expected highlights to the season include:
- The airline’s most-traveled day this summer will be Friday, July 17, with 6,995 flights. The second most-traveled day will be one week earlier, on Friday, July 10, with 6,991 flights
- Five flights, representing roughly 500 customers will be taking off each minute during the summer.
- American is adding two destinations to its route map this summer: service from its hub in Philadelphia (PHL) to Budapest, Hungary (BUD) and Prague (PRG). That is in addition to three other new long-haul routes at other hubs: Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Athens, Greece (ATH) and Zurich (ZRH); and Miami (MIA) to Milan (MXP)
- The airline said its top three non-hub destinations this summer are Orlando (MCO), London-Heathrow (LHR) and Boston (BOS).
American has prepared for record numbers of customers by performing offseason preventive maintenance on its fleet, ensuring its facilities are ready for the summer heat, and staffing up in key locations. In addition, the airline has made key changes to improve reliability across its network.
A reimagined DFW schedule features a new 13-bank schedule that has already minimized delays, reduced customer misconnects and gate changes. At PHL, a redesigned afternoon schedule for transatlantic flights is giving customers more travel options while easing congestion and improving on-time performance.
“From the way we’ve restructured our hubs to the investments we’ve made in scheduling, our more than 130,000 team members have built an operation that’s not only reliable and resilient, but ready for the summer peak demand,” said American’s COO David Seymour. “It’s an operation built with our customers in mind and one we look forward to delivering for the millions of customers counting on us this summer.”
