The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and The Boeing Company confirmed that the aviation company paid a $3.1 million fine over a series of safety violations, including issues connected to the January 2024 Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 incident.

According to Reuters.com, Boeing paid the $3.1 million fine in January 2026 but did not publicly disclose it until this week. Boeing confirmed it paid the full penalty.

The FAA originally proposed $3,139,319 in fines against Boeing in September 2025. The agency said the penalties represented the maximum civil penalty available under federal law and covered violations that occurred between September 2023 and February 2024.

The FAA identified hundreds of violations at Boeing's 737 production facility in Renton, Washington, as well as the 737-fuselage factory operated by Boeing subcontractor Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas.

In addition, the agency said Boeing presented two aircraft that were not airworthy for FAA certification, and pressured a worker performing duties on behalf of the FAA to approve a 737 MAX despite the determination that the aircraft did not meet regulatory standards.

The violations came after the January 2024 Alaska Airlines MAX 9 door-plug blowout, in which investigators found that four key bolts were missing. The incident prompted the FAA to ground the MAX 9 fleet temporarily and impose a production limit of 38 aircraft per month on Boeing.

The FAA lifted the production cap in October 2025, but the agency continues to maintain enhanced oversight of Boeing's manufacturing operations. In July 2026, the agency said the airplane manufacturer could resume issuing airworthiness certificates for newly produced 737 MAX and 787 aircraft following months of reviews showing consistent production quality.
