United States airplane manufacturer Boeing announced that it
would lay off around 10 percent of its global workforce.
According to Reuters.com,
Boeing is working through massive amounts of debt, which has resulted in the manufacturer
sending out the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications (WARN) to around
17,000 employees.
The WARN means the workers will stay on Boeing's payroll
until January to comply with federal requirements that give them 60 days’
notice prior to ending their employment. Morale is reportedly low among
employees as they await notice of who will be laid off.
“As previously announced, we are adjusting our workforce
levels to align with our financial reality and a more focused set of priorities,”
a Boeing spokesperson said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring our
employees have support during this challenging time.”
Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, recently said the company
is focused on reviving production of its strongest-selling 737 MAX planes, but
the manufacturer is still recovering from a weeks-long strike by more than
33,000 employees.
This year has been brutal for the company, starting with the
ramifications of a door panel blowing off a 737 MAX jet in January. As a
result, federal regulators have clamped down on Boeing, causing its former CEO
to leave the brand.
