The remote island of South Caicos is getting new, direct air service.

BermudAir, the flag carrier of Bermuda, has announced that it will begin offering nonstop flights from Newark Liberty International Airport, Travel + Leisure has reported.

The flights, which will kick off December 20, will take travelers to Norman B. Saunders Sr. International Airport (XSC) on South Caicos, a remote island in Turks and Caicos located between the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic.

In order to reach the island by air, travelers currently must first fly to either Providenciales or Grand Turk first and take a short domestic flight to South Caicos.

The effort to establish a new nonstop route from the New York City area was spearheaded by representatives from the new Salterra Resort & Spa, located on the island.

“South Caicos gives travelers something genuinely different within the Turks and Caicos Islands, and we saw a compelling opportunity when Salterra approached us about connecting the island directly with the New York market,” Adam Scott, founder and CEO of BermudAir, told Travel + Leisure.

An upscale, locally-owned property that’s part of the Marriott brand, Salterra is especially notable for its ambitions to become a model for sustainability in the Caribbean hospitality sector.

So far, that effort has included a public-private partnership to install a 400-kilowatt solar system on the resort’s rooftops, along with water conservation measures and waste-reduction programs. Additionally, the resort partners with local non-profit organizations, such as FisherFolk First, which helps establish sustainable, small-scale fisheries.

New airlift direct from a major metropolitan hub like New York will make it even easier for guests to discover the 100-room resort.

“This route is about more than adding another point to our Caribbean network. It creates easier access to an exceptional island while generating meaningful economic activity and supporting South Caicos’ next chapter of sustainable tourism growth,” Scott said.

The new flights will operate seasonally on Sundays and Thursdays. The ticket price for the 3.5-hour journey will be around $773 round-trip.
