Those who want to score the best deal on summer 2018 flights should book their tickets this week.

That's right, there's no time like the present, according to a just-released report from Hipmunk detailing the most budget-friendly time to purchase tickets for summer travel this year.

According to the report, which was based on an examination of Hipmunk data, travelers should book summer getaways now in order to maximize domestic flight savings, when compared to those who wait until mid-June to book.

"Booking your summer holiday flights the week of April 23 can save up to 16 percent on Memorial Day and 14 percent on Fourth of July flights," states the report, which also notes that the average booking price for a ticket purchased this week is $279.

Sunday, June 10 is the most expensive day to fly this summer, when tickets will be an average of $386 and Saturday, August 25 is shaping up to be the least expensive day, with average prices hovering around $224.

July 4 meanwhile, will be the busiest day of the summer for air travel (not totally surprising.) Eight percent of all summer bookings are for July 4 flights.

Overall, Hipmunk found that booking prices for domestic flights for summer travel are up four percent this year when compared to equivalent booking window (January 1 through April 14) last year. Prices for international flights this summer have only increased about one percent.

"There are some amazing deals to be found, especially in cities where new flight routes have opened, like Hamburg, Germany; Singapore and Fukuoka, Japan," states the report. "Singapore is especially having a moment this summer, with demand up and prices down 30 percent year over year."

For those who aren't able to rush out and book a ticket this week, all is not lost. Hipmunk says the general rule of thumb is to book three weeks in advance of departure for summer flights to save up to 14 percent.
