A suspect has been taken into Australian police custody after they foiled what they described as a “bizarre” plane hijacking plan, in which the suspect desired to make a multi-stop trip from the Land Down Under to the Middle East.
According to PEOPLE, the Australian Federal Police and intelligence agencies are investigating the plot, which might have been fueled by antisemitism. The suspect was arrested before the hijacking attempt could be made.
The plan itself was described as “bizarre” by authorities, because planes heading to the Middle East from Australia typically need to refuel multiple times, which was the suspect’s intention. How he would have refueled after hijacking the plane has not been released.
The Department of Home Affairs in Australia and other authorities have increased security at major and secondary airports across the nation.
With the man in federal custody and his trial ongoing since July 2025, there is currently no threat to passenger planes in Australia.
