Spirit Airlines announced the launch of a new round-up
feature on the carrier’s official website that allows travelers to increase
their total to the next whole dollar during booking, with the balance being
donated to the Spirit Charitable Foundation.
The low-cost airline is celebrating International Charity
Day by making it easier to contribute to the causes of nonprofits across
Spirit's network and make a difference in the lives of children and families,
service members and the environment.
The Spirit Charitable Foundation has committed $1.3 million
to 57 nonprofits across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean in
2023, with plans to announce more investments later this year.
“This new initiative is a big step forward in our efforts to
make a meaningful social impact in the communities where we live and fly and
gives our guests a chance to contribute to the life-changing work our nonprofit
partners are carrying out every day,” Spirit Charitable Foundation President Lania
Rittenhouse said.
“We're also proud to involve our Diversity, Equity,
Inclusion, and Belonging (DEI&B) Resource Groups in the nonprofit selection
process, allowing these Team Members to identify organizations that resonate
with them and advance causes they're passionate about,” Rittenhouse continued.
While Spirit continues to highlight all the ways it gives
back to the community, the airline has been in the news recently for the wrong
reasons.
Last week, the carrier agreed to pay up to $8.25 million to settle
a lawsuit by passengers deceived by carry-on bag fees. The class-action
lawsuit was filed by passengers who claimed they were hit with additional
carry-on bag fees when they booked their tickets through third-party websites,
such as Expedia, Travelocity, CheapOair and more.
In addition, a report from last week claimed that improper
redactions in a lawsuit exposed JetBlue’s plans to raise
airfare prices by as much as 40 percent on Spirit flights following the
successful completion of the merger.
