Spirit Airlines announced two new changes to the passenger
experience on the heels of the carrier’s recently launched no change or cancel
fee policy improvements.
The low-cost airline is now offering an increased checked
bag weight allowance to 50 pounds and an extended expiration date of Future
Travel Vouchers to 12 months for vouchers issued on or after June 3.
“Spirit has changed the game before and we're doing it again
with this first round of initiatives that will lead the way to a new era of
low-fare, high-value flying,” Spirit Chief Commercial Officer Matt Klein said.
“These enhancements provide each and every one of our guests
unparalleled flexibility and peace of mind, and it's just the beginning of our
pursuit to make affordable travel easier and more seamless than ever,” Klein
continued.
In May, Spirit eliminated flight
change and cancellation fees, addressing a common frustration among air
travelers. The change came just days after fellow low-cost carrier Frontier
Airlines made a similar announcement, signaling an overall shift in strategy
among budget airlines.
Previously, Spirit’s change and cancellation fees ranged
from $69 to $119, depending on when the change was made and how close it was to
the passenger’s departure date.
Earlier this week, Spirit named Vice President and
Controller Brian McMenamy as Interim
Chief Financial Officer, effective June 14. McMenamy will succeed Scott
Haralson, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, who is
departing to become CFO of car rental company Hertz Global Holdings.
