The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says it's prepared to handle a 6 percent jump in spring break travelers this year but is urging travelers to play their part to ensure a smooth experience.

"TSA screened a record number of passengers in 2023, and we expect that trend to continue this year," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement.

"So far in 2024, travel volumes are trending at nearly 6 percent above the same period in 2023. We always work closely with our airline and airport partners to plan for and meet the increasing travel demand while doing our best to maintain our wait times of 30 minutes or less in standard lanes and 10 minutes or less in TSA PreCheck lanes."

The agency defines the busy peak spring break travel season as March 7-25.

In anticipation of busy checkpoints, TSA is advising travelers to pack smart and reminds them that any liquids, sunscreen containers and alcohol over 3.4 ounces must be packed in a checked bag.

Amid an increase in firearm discoveries at airports nationwide, officials also warn that unloaded guns must be packed in a locked, hard-sided case in checked baggage only and must be declared to the airline.

Travelers are also reminded to arrive at the checkpoint with a mobile or printed boarding pass and to have a valid ID in hand. As always, spring break travelers should arrive at the airport early enough to navigate longer lines without missing their flight and exercise patience during the busy period.

Additionally, travelers are encouraged to reach out to @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger if they have a question about what's allowed at checkpoints and to enroll in TSA PreCheck starting from $78 for five years to expedite their screening experience.
