United Airlines is continuing its rapid expansion of ultra-fast Wi-Fi to its international network.
The carrier is beginning to roll out Starlink connectivity on its fleet of Boeing 737 Max 8 planes based in Guam.
So far, United has equipped two of the 737 Max jets with the free, high-speed Wi-Fi. Those are among the first Max planes in the carrier’s fleet to receive Starlink capability.
The addition of the convenient in-flight amenity is part of United’s larger upgrade of its fleet in Guam. The carrier has transitioned its planes based on the island from older Boeing 737-800 planes to the new Max models.
Guam is an important hub for United that improves connections to its Asia route network.
"We said we would replace the entire Guam fleet with MAX 8 aircraft by the end of this year, and we've finished early,” said David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer. “Now those same aircraft are among the first MAX 8s in our fleet to get Starlink. Starlink is a game changer for our customers, delivering the fast, reliable connectivity they expect, and we’re proud that our Guam-based aircraft are among the first of our MAX 8s to receive it.”
Starlink’s high speeds allow travelers to use Wi-Fi the same way they would on the ground, with the ability to stream content, play games, edit documents, and more with no lag from gate to gate.
United says customers’ Wi-Fi satisfaction scores more than double on its Starlink-equipped aircraft.
The carrier has been rolling out Starlink access across its planes at a steady pace, including on some of its widebody jets that operate transatlantic flights. About 47% of United’s daily flights now feature Starlink, according to the airline.
United expects to expand Starlink access to its entire fleet by the end of 2027.
