United Airlines has reached an agreement with Viasat, Inc. to install the global communications company's in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) system on more than 70 aircraft in the coming months.

The agreement is great news for air travelers, whether they're seeking enhanced in-flight entertainment or an improved internet connection so they can get more work done en route to their next destination.

As the airline's direct in-flight internet service provider, Viasat will offer fast and high-quality connectivity through its high-capacity satellite system. The latest generation IFEC system will also power United's Private Screening entertainment option, offering passengers access to hundreds of entertainment titles from their own personal devices.

Access to Viasat's Ka-band satellite system means United will be able to perform over-the-air content uploads to its onboard entertainment system to keep its library as current as possible.

"We're pleased to expand our relationship with United, now providing direct internet and entertainment services to them and their customers," said Viasat's vice president and general manager, Commercial Aviation, Don Buchman, in a statement. "We're focused on optimizing customer satisfaction through great connectivity and entertainment. Our goal is to ensure United's customers are fully connected and enjoying their onboard connectivity and entertainment experiences."

The contract with Viasat comes one month after United executives hinted at plans to increase capacity and lower ticket prices in its ongoing effort to compete with low-cost carriers. Enhanced in-flight connectivity and entertainment options could also give the carrier an edge over its competitors.

At least 58 of United's new Boeing 737MAX aircraft will be outfitted with Viasat's most advanced system.
