Woman Goes into Labor on US Airways Flight

A US Airways flight from Philadelphia to Charlotte had to make an unscheduled stop on Tuesday when one of the passengers went into labor, forcing the plane to land at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina.

According to WXII12.com, the plane made the emergency landing at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday and the woman subsequently gave birth to her child in the ambulance while still on the airport's property.

Following the delivery, the passenger was taken to Women's Hospital in Greensboro, and the baby-named Nylah-and her mother were reportedly doing well. The plane continued its flight to Charlotte after the woman was safely removed, per WXII12.com.

While this was a unique event, it happens more often than you'd think.

On December 9, a flight from San Francisco to Phoenix was diverted to Los Angeles International Airport when a passenger went into labor and delivered the baby on-board the flight. Luckily, there was a doctor and nurse on board to help the situation and all parties were happy and healthy.

Another similar incident took place in December when a flight from San Francisco to Minneapolis made an unscheduled stop in Salt Lake City after a woman on board went into labor, according to CNN.com. She did not give birth on the plane, though, and was instead rushed to the hospital in time to have her child there.

In a report from Katia Hetter of CNN.com, many different airlines have policies for pregnant women getting on flights. For example, US Airways requires mothers who are due within seven days to show a doctor's certificate that clears them as fit to fly.

It is unclear if the woman on the flight from Philadelphia to Charlotte was required to show a doctor's note.
