Officials at an Atlanta airport are conducting an investigation to determine how an 11-year-old boy got past security checkpoints and attempted to board a flight.
According to CBS Atlanta, a Transportation Security Administration spokesperson said the unidentified 11-year-old was at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when he was reportedly screened at a security checkpoint and asked where his parents were.
The boy slipped away from the agent and made his way through the airport to the gate for a Delta Air Lines flight, where he was stopped by an airline employee for not having the proper boarding pass.
The Delta employee alerted police to the situation and officers attempted to locate the child's family. Authorities called on the Georgia Department of Family and Children's Services to help with the situation.
CBS Atlanta spoke to security expert Brent C. Brown about the incident:
"Where's the ticket? Where's the parents? This is a horrendous breach of security, no doubt about it," Brown said in a statement. "Protocol is you have to show ID and a ticket for that day flying to go through the screening process. In this particular case, with the 11-year-old, they may not have ID, but they're going to have a valid ID with a parent they're traveling with."
