The U.S. Federal government’s employees spend a lot of money on official travel—last year, this was to the tune of $2.8 billion. The White House says that these employees took more than 2.8 million flights, booked 2.3 million vehicle rentals, and took 33,000 rail trips. As such, Federal travel accounts for 1.8% of federal greenhouse gas emissions.
Now, the White House is asking those employees to use trains and electric vehicles (EVs) whenever possible, in an effort to further curb emissions.
“The federal government will save taxpayers money, reduce emissions, strengthen our growing electric vehicle industry and create good-paying union jobs,” said White House Council on Environmental Quality chair Brenda Mallory.
Two years ago, President Joe Biden signed an executive order directing the government to cease purchasing gas-powered vehicles by the year 2035. Additionally, all light-duty federal acquisitions should be electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2027.
The White House guidelines instruct employees to rent EVs if the cost is less than or equivalent to an internal combustion engine automobile. They are also being asked to use EVs when possible on taxi or rideshare platforms, such as Uber or Lyft.
Additionally, Federal employees will now use rail for trips less than 250 miles when cost-effective and available, instead of taking an airplane or vehicle. They will use public transit (subway, bus, light rail, etc.) when conducting local travel—or upon arrival at the official travel location.
