When the MS Finnmarken undergoes a massive overhaul in 2020, it will be Hurtigruten's most extensive upgrade in the 125-year history of the cruise line.
Starting in 2021, the fully refurbished MS Finnmarken will explore handpicked destinations along the Norwegian coastline on year-round expedition cruises. The overhaul begins in the first quarter of 2020.
Some of the propulsion changes include substantially upgraded low-emission engines, the addition of shore-power connectivity and all necessary preparations for future battery pack installation.
"We will transform her into a full-fledged premium expedition cruise ship, with all the comforts, facilities and expertise you need for creating a perfect adventure," Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam said in a statement.
As for the cabins and suites, they will all be fully refurbished using natural Scandinavian materials that will create a relaxed and stylish look and feel. On deck 8 aft, in the current gym and sauna area, five large suites with panoramic windows will also be added.
In addition, four brand new restaurants will be added to the vessel, including Restaurant Aune, Restaurant Lindstrom, Fredheim and an unnamed grill venue will be added outdoors on deck 8.
The MS Finnmarken will also add Hurtigruten's signature Science Center on deck 4 and a larger wellness area on deck 7. The ship's outdoor pool area will also be fully refurbished.
