The number of Americans planning to cruise in 2027 is expected to reach a record high, with an estimated 22.4 million people traveling via ocean cruise next year.
Americans, according to AAA and Tourism Economics, are cruising now more than ever, with the number expected to increase 3.6% from 2026—the fifth consecutive year of record gains for the cruise industry.
Cruise demand hit a record high in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers of 14.2 million cruisers, and has been growing ever since. Over 90% of cruisers rate their experience as good or very good, and 93% of cruisers choose to cruise again.
Seventy-one percent of cruisers are expected to visit the Caribbean by cruise ship next year, with smaller portions sailing Alaska (7%), the Mediterranean (6%) and the rest of the world (16%).
The top ten ports for next year include heavy hitters like Miami and Port Canaveral, as well as Barcelona, Southampton and Singapore.
“Cruising offers a unique type of vacation because you unpack once and visit multiple destinations with meals and entertainment included,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “The key is finding the right cruise that meets your needs, and that’s where travel agents come in. Working with an advisor ensures you’re booking a ship with amenities and activities that fit your interests and lifestyle.”
Seven-night cruises are the most popular, yet in 2025, 45% of U.S. cruisers took ocean cruises of six nights or less, up from 39% in 2019. Shorter cruises are more comfortable for new cruisers who aren’t sure they’ll enjoy the experience, and they’re also more appealing to budget-conscious or time-conscious travelers.
