As the summer heats up, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is making a splash with an expansion of its "Outdoors for Everyone" initiative.
Launched on June 20, 2024, this new phase focuses on water accessibility, aiming to break down barriers and create inclusive environments for individuals living with paralysis and other disabilities, giving them the chance to enjoy water-based activities.
Building On Success
The "Outdoors for Everyone" initiative began in 2023. The first phase focused on making walking, hiking, and outdoor trails accessible for wheelchair users and others with disabilities. Now, in its next phase, the foundation is taking its mission further by addressing the often-overlooked area of water accessibility.
Dan McNeal, Director of the Quality of Life Grants Program at the Reeve Foundation, emphasized the importance of this expansion: "Nature-based activities have a profound impact on mental health, social interactions, and overall quality of life. With water accessibility as our primary focus this summer, the foundation is pleased to support opportunities for individuals living with paralysis and caregivers to immerse themselves in nature and experience its unparalleled joy."

Comprehensive Approach to Water Accessibility
The expanded initiative takes a multi-faceted approach to ensure that everyone can enjoy summer water activities.
"Summertime is fun time, and we want to make sure that everyone has the ability to interact with nature in the various ways that able-bodied individuals do," said McNeal.
Information and Resources: The foundation's highly trained Information Specialist team plays a crucial role in identifying accessible pools, beaches, and water programs. They assist community members in planning day trips and vacations, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can fully participate in water-based activities.
Online Resource Map: An invaluable tool for the community, the foundation's Resource Map helps locate accessible resources, equipment, and programs throughout the United States. This online platform makes it easier for individuals to find water-accessible locations and activities in their area or at their travel destinations.
Water Accessibility Checklist: The foundation has created a comprehensive checklist serving as an educational resource for both the community and outdoor organizations, and it's something the foundation takes great pride in.
This checklist provides recommendations and tips for beaches, pools, and other water environments, covering various aspects of accessibility:
- Pre-arrival information: Website details, maps, and accessibility information
- Arrival and departure logistics: Accessible parking and wheelchair transfer guidance
- Activities: Recommendations for water-accessible activities, including beach access mats, accessible boats, adaptive water sports, and accessible flotation devices
- Safety and health considerations: Special tips for conditions affecting those with disabilities and general water safety guidelines

Partnerships for Progress
Recognizing the power of collaboration, the Reeve Foundation has partnered with several organizations to enhance the impact of the "Outdoors for Everyone" initiative:
- The Ability Center (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
- PVA-WI (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
- Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB) (Annapolis, Maryland)
- Impossible Dream (Miami, Florida)
- National Ability Center (NAC) (Park City, Utah)
Perhaps most notably, the foundation has joined forces with the National Park Service, a champion of outdoor accessibility. This partnership has resulted in the addition of accessible programs and resources from the National Park Service to the Reeve Foundation's Resource Map.
A Commitment to Inclusivity
The expansion of "Outdoors for Everyone" to include water accessibility demonstrates the Reeve Foundation's ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals and families impacted by paralysis.
