With travelers more environmentally conscious than before, Copenhagen’s official tourism organization is launching a new initiative to provide travelers visiting the Danish city an easy, incentivized way to travel greener.
The initiative is called CopenPay. It transforms a traveler’s green actions into currency to spend at Copenhagen’s cultural experiences. It rewards actions like biking, participating in a cleanup effort, volunteering at an urban farm and more, providing travelers with a green currency they can spend for free access to museum tours, kayak rentals, even a free farm-to-table lunch.

CopenPay is an easy system to use: travelers can simply show a train ticket, arrive at a participating attraction via bike, or present other proof of green actions to redeem their rewards. The initiative currently offers over 20 complimentary experiences and attractions this summer under a pilot program, which begins July 15 and ends August 11.
“It is a core task for us to make traveling sustainable,” said Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, CEO at Wonderful Copenhagen. “And we will only succeed if we bridge the large gap between the visitors’ desire to act sustainably and their actual behavior. It might sound simple, but it is not. We want visitors to make conscious, green choices and hopefully end up getting even better experiences while they visit.
“Through CopenPay we therefore aim to incentivize tourists' sustainable behavior while enriching their cultural experience of our destination,” Aarø-Hansen continued. “It is an experimental and a small step towards creating a new mindset amongst travelers and one among many initiatives we are doing to make traveling more sustainable.”
