The U.S. State Department updated its travel advisory for Egypt this week, lowering it from Level 3 (reconsider travel) to Level 2, advising Americans to exercise increased caution in the African country this summer.

Like most destinations around the world, U.S. officials continue to warn of threats such as terrorism, crime and health.

Is Egypt Safe to Visit?

Based on the latest travel guidance from the U.S. State Department, the short answer is yes, Egypt is safe to visit.

However, the July 15 travel advisory notes that some areas have an increased risk and recommends travelers avoid the following regions:

  • The Northern and Middle Sinai Peninsula due to terrorism
  • The Western Desert due to risk to safety and security unless traveling with a professionally licensed tour company
  • Egyptian border areas due to military zones.

"The U.S. Embassy has limited ability to help dual-national U.S.-Egyptian citizens who are arrested or detained," the department adds. "Egyptian law considers dual citizens to be solely Egyptian citizens."

What Are Egypt's Biggest Safety Concerns?

Terrorism is a legitimate concern, but that's on par with most popular destinations across Europe this summer, and much of this threat is focused on the aforementioned Northern and Middle Sinai Peninsula.

Additionally, the State Department's latest update points out that "Egyptian authorities generally offer effective security protection."

When it comes to crime, opportunistic pickpocketing attempts and potential harassment of women and foreigners are highlighted as the biggest concerns. Ultimately, travelers exercising common sense with their personal belongings and maintaining their poise among the crowds should encounter few headaches.

"It can include vulgar comments, gestures, indecent exposure, and unwanted physical contact. Tourists should beware of overcharging and scams in tourist areas," according to the State Department.
