Big Sur is on its way to making a comeback after a difficult winter - to say the least. The Post Ranch Inn has just announced that it will reopen on April 20, less than one week away. This is a big step for Big Sur.
Heavy winter rains and storms washed out a key bridge that connects the city to the southern portion of Highway 1. The collapse basically cuts off the iconic drive at San Simeon for visitors looking to travel on Highway 1, forcing them to turn back to the U.S. Route 101 and cutting Big Sur from the drive, making the city accessible only by air.
To solve this problem, Post Ranch Inn just announced the Escape Through the Skies package, which will transport guests to the inn via helicopter.
Guests will enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime, personalized opportunity to see the breathtaking Big Sur coast from the air, landing directly on the property (or at another local spot, if there is fog), the resort said in a statement.
The package includes guestroom accommodations; roundtrip helicopter service for two from Monterey's Del Monte Aviation; daily four-course dinner for two at Sierra Mar; daily light lunch for two at Sierra Mar; daily breakfast at Sierra Mar; diverse activities and amenities including guided nature walks, culinary garden tours, stargazing, daily yoga classes, and more.

A few other businesses will also reopen in conjunction with the Post Ranch Inn: Nepenthe Restaurant and its Phoenix Shop, and Hawthorne Gallery (the Tap House will also be open).
Another win for Big Sur is that the bridge will not take the previously estimated one year to repair. According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, Caltrans has announced the bridge will reopen on Sept. 30.
