Tourists have a new destination to add to their summer itineraries as Kalahari Resorts and Conventions officially opened another water park resort in the Pocono Mountains.
According to Kalahari, the newest facility for the company is now Pennsylvania's largest indoor water park, and the opening was celebrated by over 600 people, including state dignitaries, Tobyhanna Township representatives, construction development managers and media outlets.
The resort has an African theme inspired by a 23-day trip to Africa taken by the Nelson family, the group that owns the Kalahari chain. With handcrafted artwork, Rwandan coffee beans and souvenirs sourced from local artisan communities, the feel of the African continent runs throughout the new water park.
Kalahari Resorts and Conventions owner Todd Nelson released a statement, saying, "Today is a big one for not only our company, but my family, as well. We have always dreamed of expanding to the East Coast, and there's no better way to do it than with our grandest resort to date in this historically prevalent tourist area."
In addition to the state's largest indoor water park, the Kalahari resort in the Pocono Mountains features 457 guest rooms, an outdoor water park, a family entertainment center, three dining experiences, a spa and salon, a 100,000 square-feet convention center and a chain of retail stores.
The construction began in October 2013, and while much of the project is already complete, Phase II is already underway, with an estimated completion date in spring 2017. The upgrades will make the PA location America's largest indoor water park.
