The idiosyncrasies of Manila are even more fascinating than they are alluring.
Never has there ever been a place that is so smothered in grime and dilapidation yet brimming with modern skyscrapers and global development. Where there are more shopping malls per square mile than in any other city in the world. Where the traffic is so bad you wonder how people ever get things done.
Yet, there's something appealing about the whole thing-a kind of buzzing, effervescent electricity that makes one want to stay for just a little while longer.
Mega Manila-which is essentially made up of several, different bustling cities-is aswarm with lovely attractions, excellent restaurants that serve local cuisine, historical spots and great hotels.
Here are some places worth ticking off the list when dropping anchor in the Philippines' biggest city:
Stays
Affordable hotels with character are few and far between in Manila, and if you're partial to boutique hotels, you'll only have a few options available.
Consider The Henry Manila in Pasay City. The beautiful boutique hotel, whose slogan is "Like No Other," is an elegant mix of classic European flourishes, Spanish colonial vibe, modern amenities and, most importantly, a homey feel.
History Lessons
It's kind of sad that many of Manila's historical sites are not as well preserved as they are in other places. Still, those still standing deserve a stopover, if only to learn about the city's extremely captivating history.
Start in Intramuros or the Walled City, Manila's oldest district and historic core. Once there, explore Fort Santiago-a Spanish citadel built in the 1500s-and San Agustin Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meander over to Rizal Park, which was used for public executions of many influential figures back in the 1800s. Then head over to the University of Santo Tomas, the oldest existing university in Asia.
Baywalk
Only a stone's throw away from Intramuros, Baywalk was once a popular haunt for young lovers. Today, locals and tourists alike frequent the two-kilometer coastal promenade, thanks to its trove of alfresco cafes and restaurants, live music venues, buskers and street performers.
Ride a kalesa or horse-drawn carriage along the strip. Later, pick a good spot to people-watch, observe the passing boats and see the setting sun.
Bonifacio Global City
For better or worse, Manila's neighborhoods of towering skyscrapers are there to stay. The newest one is the upscale commercial and business district of Bonifacio Global City, germinating in the city of Taguig.
It's a smaller Manhattan, if you must, with its plethora of modern hip restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. But it's also very Filipino, with its collection of shopping malls that include SM Aura Premier and Market Market.
Viva Las Vegas
It's a known fact that Filipinos love to gamble, so it comes as no surprise that Manila has its own casino district.
Head to Entertainment City set along the waterfront where there are a number of casino resorts, the newest of which is Okada Manila. The ultra-modern, pink-themed hotel and casino is home to a light and water show called The Fountain. The attraction is reminiscent of Bellagio's iconic fountain show and the biggest in Asia. Most importantly, it's free!
After the show, pop into Tokyo Milk Cheese Company and order a wheel of their amazing Milk Cheesecake.
The Malls
Make like the locals and hang out at a couple of Metro Manila's numerous malls. Some of the best ones are SM Mall of Asia, SM Aura Premier and SM Megamall.
Travel Tips
If it's your first time in Manila or the Philippines, there are a few tips to keep in mind:
-Manila is one of the most congested cities in the world, so account for traffic when getting from one place to another.
-Have cash on hand at all times. Many businesses are cash-only.
-Use Uber or Grab. Taxis are expensive and sometimes shady, while buses and jeepneys can take forever.
-Keep your belongings secure as pickpocketing is still rampant.
-Use lots of sunscreen, even on cloudy days.
