In an attempt to appeal to the demand for rich, authentic cultural experiences from travelers, Mexico City has created a new Web series to showcase the city's design scene, hotel culture and experiences that currently define travel to the destination.
The Mexico City Tourism Trust partnered with celebrity designer and HGTV host Genevieve Gorder to create a series that highlights her picks for design tips, trends and treasures within the city.
The six-part series immerses viewers in the culture of Mexico through vignettes that show Gorder sharing here favorite places to shop, stay and find inspiration in the capital city. She meets with up-and-coming designers in the series and explores shopping hot spots.
Mexico City's goal with the series is to engage the passions of consumers through things such as design and Gorder's onsite interviews and expert tips will educate viewers on the products, places and experiences that are distinctive to the destination and position the city as a forward-thinking international design hub.
The videos all focus on experiences that are available to a variety of travelers:
La Ciudadela
Gorder expertly navigates the open-air market in the heart of Mexico City, showcasing a place that brings together traditional tourist souvenirs and artisanal products from around the country. She focuses on handpainted figures and hammocks and provides viewers with information on history and geology and, of course, some design tips.
Onora Casa
In Polanco, the show visits the heart of upscale designer and home décor shopping, Onora Casa, which is a place where centuries-old techniques are combined with high-end home design.
In the show, Gorder talks with New York City transplant and cofounder of the shop, Maggie Galtonabout, about her vision for rescuing traditional methods. They also discuss the craftsmanship behind the sophisticated textiles and housewares.
La Metropolitana
Gorder visits La Metropolitana, and takes visitors behind the scenes of a burgeoning furniture design firm that is transforming Mexican design and redefining what "Made in Mexico" means. In the show, the young owners talk about their process and then show off their showroom.
Blend Concept Store
Another design store that showcases Mexico's artistic culture is Blend, a concept store and designer showroom dedicated to selling the latest designs from Mexico. Gorder shops for her favorite trends and Mexican designers here in the series.
Hotel Carlota
Looking for some hotel inspiration, the show heads to Hotel Carlota, one of the newest hot spots in the city. Gorder shows off the property's distinct architectural and decorative elements with architect Javier Sanchez, who led the design of the hotel with his firm, JSa Architects.
Claudia Fernández Vintage Furniture
An artist, philanthropist and vintage furniture dealer, Fernandez is an expert in midcentury modern design. Fans of this type of design are treated to VIP access into Gorder's trip to this appointment-only showroom filled with treasures from this iconic period, from intricate light fixtures to bar carts.
