She's not even officially in the position yet, but Mara Lezama Espinosa, the mayor-elect of Benito Juarez, is already reaching across the aisle-and the border-to work toward even better tourism for Cancun and the surrounding area.
Along with simply getting to know each other and strengthening an important personal relationship, the two spoke of the need to work together on various important facets of tourism, including: student exchange programs, economic, social and cultural development, as well as security.
Lezama Espinosa tweeted about the meeting:
Translated, the tweet reads: "I met with the United States Consul General in Merida, Courtney A. Baele. We talked about the importance of #tourism for all of us and for that reason I will promote converting the Municipal Tourism Directorate into the Municipal Secretariat; and thus encourage visits to #Cancun"

More meetings are expected.
"We have strengthened an excellent relationship, and I reiterate that we will work hand-in-hand in a coordinated manner and in collaboration with the United States and the three government orders in matters of security," Lezama Espinosa said in a statement to Riviera Maya News.
Cancun is a large and growing piece of Mexican tourism overall, and has been in the news recently, with the airport adding a much-needed new terminal while the local police force hopes to beef up enforcement by 50 percent.
