Officials from Quintana Roo have passed legislation banning single-use plastics throughout the state within 12 months.
According to the Riviera Maya News, the Congress of Quintana Roo passed the bill, which will be implemented in two phases, including banning single-use plastics in sensitive areas such as the islands of Holbox, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres within six months.
After the new rules go into effect on the islands of Quintana Roo, they will begin being enforced throughout the rest of the state within the next year. The new law is intended to help reduce waste and protect the environment.
When the law goes into effect, plastic items such as utensils, straws, plates, glasses, cups, trays and cutlery will be banned. In addition, the ban includes disposable plastic bags used at stores and markets.
The only exceptions to the new rules are plastic packaging used for equipment and materials in the construction and medical industries. The latest legislation brings Quintana Roo in line with other states in Mexico banning the single-use plastics.
