The Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Civil Administration, and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority have inaugurated the renovated baptism site “Kasr el Yahud– Jordan River Crossing,” ranked as the third most important Christian site in Israel.

The Director-General of the Ministry of Tourism, Michael Izhakov, the Deputy Head of the Civil Administration, Lt. Col. L., and the Director-General of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, Raya Shurki, today inaugurated the site in a festive ceremony following an extensive renovation project carried out with an investment of NIS 25 million.

The works were funded by the Ministry of Tourism and the Civil Administration through the Government Tourism Corporation and included the development of external infrastructure such as roads, parking areas, and landscaping; the construction of a large air-conditioned service building equipped with hot showers and changing rooms; a new visitor service center; a wide wooden deck enabling safe access to the river; a dedicated prayer pergola; and additional visitor facilities.

Ranked as the third most important Christian site in Israel, after the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Church of the Nativity, the upgraded site significantly enhances the visitor experience for the hundreds of thousands who arrive each year.

Minister of Tourism, Haim Katz:“ The investment in Kasr el Yahud, a historic site for the Jewish people and one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Christianity, is another step we are taking to develop and upgrade tourism infrastructure at faith and heritage sites. Our goal is to improve the visitor experience and ensure a high-quality and accessible visit.”

Director-General of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, Raya Shurki:“The baptism site is one of the most spiritual and historically significant sites in the Christian world and serves as a major pilgrimage destination for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority places the utmost importance on preserving the sanctity of the site alongside its development and accessibility at the highest standards.

Our role is to safeguard the values of heritage, nature, and landscape for the benefit of the general public, as we do at many other sites of importance to diverse communities and religions. We are pleased to provide an improved visitor experience — respectful, safe, and comfortable — while strictly preserving the unique natural, landscape, and heritage values of the Jordan River and the entire region.”

The baptism site “Kasr el Yahud"– Jordan River Crossing” is a central pilgrimage destination for hundreds of thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world, who come to immerse themselves in the river, according to Christian tradition, this is the very location where John the Baptist baptized Jesus nearly two thousand years ago.

At the point where the Jordan River crosses the Jericho plains, it forms a unique lifeline in the heart of the desert.

The site first opened to visitors in 2009, initially with temporary structures. Since then, hundreds of thousands have visited annually, and at its peak in 2019, the number of visitors reached nearly one million tourists and pilgrims.

Following the recent renovation, the site has been upgraded to the highest standards in order to provide a convenient, safe, and respectful visitor experience.

Later this year, an air-conditioned auditorium is expected to be constructed, enabling year-round prayers and events in all weather conditions, as well as an accessible pathway to the water for visitors with physical disabilities.

Additional information is available on the Israel Nature and Parks Authority website.
