Raise your hand if peace and tranquility are becoming an increasingly pressing priority in today’s chaotic world.

If you’re constantly seeking ways to unplug and reset, know this: You’re far from alone. A growing number of travelers are seeking vacations that help them feel more grounded and mindful, according to a new survey conducted by the platform Travelbag.

So it’s hardly surprising that searches for ‘calmcations’ - a type of travel focused entirely on peace, quiet, and rejuvenation - are on the rise.

The good news is the experts at Travelbag have come up with a ranking of the planet’s 15 calmest locales, places where you can truly quench your thirst for peace and tranquility.

The ranking was developed after assessing factors like noise and light pollution, along with the number and quality of green spaces, and also local congestion levels. Based on these and other factors, the result of this effort showed (drumroll please) that the planet’s calmest destination is Queenstown, New Zealand.

“Nestled beside the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wakatipu and framed by the majestic Southern Alps, Queenstown offers a tranquil escape immersed in natural beauty,” says the newly released ranking.

Here’s a closer look at the planet’s top three most tranquil destinations and why they stole the show.

Queenstown, New Zealand

Boasting an impressive cleanliness score of 91.7, higher than any other destination, and a high green space quality score of 94.4, Queenstown offers “a pristine environment that invites you to truly slow down, switch off, and connect with nature,” says the ranking.

What’s more, despite its status as a popular travel destination, Queenstown has managed to maintain a moderate travel congestion score of 87.7, “meaning getting around remains smooth and stress-free,” says the report.

And when the sun sets, Queenstown’s low noise and light pollution score of 25 ensures peaceful evenings under star-filled skies.

The Seychelles

The Seychelles ranks as the second most tranquil destination, on The Travelbag ranking. The remote and idyllic islands offer "a near-perfect haven for those seeking peace and tranquillity,” says the report.

“With the lowest levels of noise and light pollution among all destinations evaluated, scoring 16.7, the islands are an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life,” says the ranking. “Its mix of unspoiled natural beauty and peaceful ambience makes it a standout destination for those craving true peace."

For those seeking the most peaceful locations within the Seychelles, islands like La Digue, Silhouette Island, and Praslin are excellent choices, according to Travelbag.

La Digue, in particular, is famed for its car-free charm, where bicycles and ox-carts replace motor traffic, creating a uniquely quiet and relaxed atmosphere.

Cairns, Australia

Rounding out the top three is Cairns, Australia - "a nature-rich city that seamlessly blends tropical charm with restorative calm,” says the report.

“Closely following the Seychelles, Cairns matches top-ranked Queenstown with an impressive noise and light pollution score of 25, a testament to the city’s unexpectedly serene atmosphere despite its vibrant energy.”

Cairns received a cleanliness score of 69.6, which combined with its strong 78.5 for the quality of green spaces, underscores Cairns’ easy access to nature and well-maintained public spaces, says the report. All of which makes Cairns an “especially appealing to those who value both tranquillity and an active, outdoorsy lifestyle."

Travelers seeking tranquillity in Cairns will find ample peaceful locations to explore including the Botanic Gardens, which offer a lush retreat close to the city. The Crystal Cascades meanwhile, offer “secluded freshwater swimming holes nestled in rainforest surrounds,” according to the report.

And just outside Cairns, Fitzroy Island and Green Island, located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, offer pristine beaches and coral lagoons perfect for snorkeling, sunbathing, or simply soaking up island serenity.
