When analyzing the motivation behind travel, one thing is clear according to a recent survey commissioned by American Express Travel: people are booking trips with a specific purpose in mind.

In fact, according to the survey, 68 percent of consumers say they prefer travel experiences that offer a deeper sense of meaning. In addition, travelers are seeking out unique experiences that help them get to know the local culture in new ways.

These are all trends and themes that have been presented by a variety of travel industry sources and experts in recent months.

But to this existing knowledge, the American Express Travel survey adds one more bit of insight - travelers are also seeking ever more unconventional spring break destinations.

While Daytona and Fort Lauderdale remain legendary for their ability to draw crowds during spring break, according to American Express Travel's in-market travel and lifestyle consultants, this year's top trending spring destinations (based on proprietary booking data), include a variety of unexpected hotspots that are showing significant year over year growth.

Mid-Coast California - San Luis Obispo, California (66% year over year growth)

Known for its Mediterranean climate, the centrally-located and hidden California gem first on the list is San Luis Obispo, or "SLO" as locals refer to it.

American Express Travel says San Luis Obispo is a key part of the perfect California spring break road-trip.

"The adventure truly starts along the drive, whether you drive in from the south or north of California, you will be mesmerized by the rolling greens, lush scenery and the Pacific Coast crisp breeze," says American Express Travel. "This quaint town is the perfect mid-point from Los Angeles to San Francisco."

With more than 100 wineries in the county and a 66 percent growth rate year over year, it may be time to add this destination your list before it becomes overrun.

An added tip: if you're traveling with teenagers, stop by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo University for a tour.

Seafood Capital of the South - Panama City, Florida(58% year over year growth)

Panama City gets its nickname as the "seafood capital of the South" in part from its location on the Gulf of Mexico and in part from the fact that it's a destination filled with local eateries and seafood markets that offer up the best seasonal catches and local delicacies.

The way travelers view this Florida city is apparently changing, as is evidenced by the destination's 58% year-over-year growth, says American Express Trave.

"Famous for a sublime coastline, pristine waters, and abundant wildlife. Panama City Beach presents the ideal locale for a beach vacation as it offers prime scuba diving, fishing, and cruising," according to American Express Travel.

Hidden Gems Across the Colorado River - Grand Junction, Colorado (55% year over year growth) and Yuma, Arizona (51% year over year growth)

Two cities that cracked the top destinations this spring happen to sit on opposite ends of the Colorado River.

With 55 percent year over year growth, Grand Junction, which is increasingly also becoming known as the hub of Colorado's wine country, has everything from smooth lakes in state parks to rapids on the Colorado River that are surrounded by dramatic red rock landscape.

Yuma meanwhile, offers a climate and location that make it a popular tourist destination all year long. Tourism highlights include Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, where visitors can view the preserved cells and guard tower of a Wild West-era prison. There are also ghost towns to explore and don't miss the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area.

Golfer's Paradise -- Hilton Head, South Carolina (51% year over year growth)

With a beautiful South Carolina Low country setting, Hilton Head is in high demand for its beautiful beaches and luxurious resorts, including the Fine Hotel & Resorts property, The Inn & Club at Harbour Town. The destination is also known for its world-class golf courses, and abundant natural beauty says American Express Travel.

With 51 percent growth year over year, Hilton Head has undertaken significant efforts to preserve the area's natural environment including constructing 60 miles of public use trails, and ensuring that all local road signs are created in natural, neutral colors. (In other words, you won't find any blinking neon signs here anywhere.)

Nor-Cal Wine Country -- Santa Rosa, California (48% year over year growth)

Santa Rosa is one of California's best-kept secrets with its prime location in the center of the Sonoma County wine region, its ocean views, great restaurants, and historic residential neighborhoods.

Not only the most cherished wine producing region in the state, the Santa Rosa area is also home to notable breweries and restaurants, says American Express Travel.

With all there is to savor, it's no surprise that it made the list of top trending spring break destinations with 48 percent year-over-year growth.
