Classic European destinations are top-of-mind for upscale U.S. travelers this summer, according to luxury travel network Virtuoso.
The data is sourced from Virtuoso's U.S.-based travel agency members and reflects future travel between this year's Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. The findings were announced during the network's recent annual Symposium in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Europe dominates Virtuoso's list with eight of the top ten countries for summer travel, based on future bookings.
Italy continues to hold on to its number one ranking as a European destination, followed by perennial favorites U.K., France and Spain. Virtuoso said these countries fit a trend identified by travel research firm Phocuswright: the desire to visit natural and cultural attractions as the leading influencer for Americans choosing destinations.
The relative strength of the U.S. dollar against both the euro and British pound also adds to the continent's popularity this year.
Virtuoso's Top Ten summer destinations are:
1. Italy
2. United Kingdom
3. France
4. Spain
5. South Africa
6. Germany
7. Ireland
8. Canada
9. Netherlands
10. Denmark

Bookings for South Africa, at number five, continue their strong growth as adventurous travelers head there for bucket-list safaris, scenic beauty and authentic experiences.
Countries with powerful ocean and river cruising appeal are also benefiting from robust interest in these segments, with travelers extending their vacations via pre- and post-cruise stays in Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark.
Canada, meanwhile, is also popular due to its proximity to the U.S., the purchasing power Americans currently enjoy there as well as heightened interest surrounding the country's 150th anniversary, according to Virtuoso.
