The Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa area of Guerrero, Mexico recently opened two new stretches of highway linking resort towns along the Pacific coast and also the regional airport.

The new $6.2 million Cerro del Vigia-Riscalillo-Playa Larga scenic highway connects the two resort towns of Playa Larga and Playa La Ropa withinZihuatanejo.

The second project, a $1.5 million undertaking, runs from Playa Blanca to the airport, Mexico News Daily reported.

Both projects are aimed at improving the image of one of the most important regions on Mexico's Pacific coast -Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa.

Governor Héctor Astudillo Flores, who was on hand for a ribbon-cutting, described the Cerro del Vigia-Riscalillo-Playa Larga scenic highway as one of the most beautiful highways in the country, adding its opening will likely give "Zihuatanejo a new boost in the tourism sector."

The new airport road meanwhile, is about nine kilometers long and is one more example of the administration's commitment to increased infrastructure improvements throughout Guerrero's Costa Grande region, Mexico News Daily reported.

As part of the effort to attract visitors to the region, the governor's office released a video of the new road's stunning ocean views via Twitter.

". . . We're going to reach an agreement to establish mechanisms that allow us to progress, during my administration, on the development of this zone which has important and beautiful attractions that assure it a great future," he said.

In other news for the region, the governor noted that the Secretariat of Tourism will soon announce whether Zihuatanejo will receive the title pueblo magico or magical town, which would also likely help increase visitors.

Should the town receive the designation, more money would be poured into improving and maintaining its appearance.
