US Embassy in the Bahamas Issues Travel Alert in the Wake of Recent Violence

The Bahamas are associated with peace and tranquility and are one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean.

It’s been a different story of late.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas has issued a security alert for the normally peaceful island country after a surge in violent crime.

"The U.S. Embassy in Nassau advises U.S. citizens to be aware that 18 murders have occurred in Nassau since the beginning of 2024," officials stated in Wednesday's alert. "Murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets. Retaliatory gang violence has been the primary motive in 2024 murders."

The Bahamian Embassy in Washington could not be reached for comment, but the government on the island is expected to increase its scrutiny of crime.

The Bahamas continues to receive a Level 2 travel advisory from the U.S. State Department, which asks Americans to exercise increased caution in the country due to crime. On Friday, the department updated its advisory to include warnings on water safety.

According to the Embassy, visitors should take the following actions:

• Exercise extreme caution in the eastern part of New Providence Island (Nassau)
• Use caution when walking or driving at night
• Keep a low profile
• Be aware of your surroundings
• Do not physically resist any robbery attempt
• Review your personal security plans
