The U.S. State Department published an updated travel advisory for France on Wednesday in the wake of riots tied to widespread protests and demonstrations.
The popular European country maintains its Level 2 advisory, with officials encouraging travelers to exercise increased caution in France due to terrorism and recent unrest.
"Violence and rioting have recently occurred in France and may continue. Avoid demonstrations and areas of unrest," the October 21 update states. "Stay away from areas with large crowds or significant police activity."
According to the State Department, protests, which have turned violent and caused damage, can disrupt transportation services and prompt police to respond with water cannons and tear gas.
The advisory also warns of potential Pickpocketing and phone thefts in crowded places and states that terrorist groups continue to plan possible attacks in France that may occur "with little or no warning."
Americans traveling to France this fall are encouraged to stay alert at tourist locations and crowded public places and avoid demonstrations and areas with significant police activity.
Travelers are also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive messages and alerts from the U.S. Embassy and make it easier to be located during an emergency.
