Virtuoso research has revealed some of the top destinations for this year's spring break travel season and bookings show that Americans are staying closer to home.
Virtuoso used its warehouse of $49.5 billion in transactions to identify the top destinations for March and April, finding that regardless of where travelers are will to go far and wide.
Top 10 include the United States, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Israel, Japan, Australia, Spain and China.
In its analysis of the most popular destinations, Virtuoso found that U.S. travelers staying close to home are looking for warm-weather destinations such as Los Angeles, Miami and Orlando.
Europe has four spots on the list, all of which are perennial favorites for U.S. travelers. Australia and New Zealand have a history of being popular for families in the spring, offering favorable weather and easy flights.
Easter and Passover draw travelers to Israel during spring holidays and also presents families with educational opportunities.
According to Virtuoso's Luxe Report, travelers wanting to see Japan's famed cherry blossoms are heading there in increasing numbers, as the country is also the top emerging destination of 2019
Several destinations not on the top 10 made Virtuoso's list of emerging destinations for spring break. Switzerland experienced the highest growth, 589 percent. The nation is riding a wave of popularity among upscale Americans for its scenery, world-class hotels and numerous outdoor activities.
Greece is also making a major coming back for the second year in a row, growing 312 percent. North Africa and Middle East destinations such as Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. Virtuoso attributes this to an influx in luxury travelers.
The Caribbean is making a swift comeback as well. Turks and Caicos and Puerto Rico both show strong growth and Chile rounds out the list with culinary and wine tourism driving growth.
