Why Denver is a Great City for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Denver is known for a lot of things: a stunning, high-altitude setting, an exciting sports scene, generous amounts of sunshine and easy access to the natural beauty of the nearby mountains.

It’s also a rewarding destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, as I learned during multiple recent visits.

The so-called Mile High City has lots to offer queer travelers — starting with a welcoming, inclusive vibe. Denver adopted an anti-discrimination policy protecting gay and lesbian residents way back in 1990. More recently, a proposal to create a Lavender Hill LGBTQ+ cultural district further exemplifies the city’s progressive attitude. It’s no wonder that Visit Denver’s LGBTQ+ travel section is so large.

Here are several of the best reasons for LGBTQ+ travelers to visit the Mile High City.

Fun Nightlife

Denver has a vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife scene, with venues to satisfy lots of traveler types. Several are on or near Colfax Avenue, a major commercial artery in Capitol Hill, the city’s highest-profile gayborhood. Among my favorites are Buddies, a laidback bar with indoor and outdoor seating and a menu that includes food and drinks, Charlie’s Denver, a dance club that hosts a variety of events (recent calendar listings include a pool tournament, drag brunch and a free “vogue femme class”) and X Bar, a sleek nightspot that hosts DJs, karaoke, drag shows and other happenings. Elsewhere in the city, Tracks provides a large-scale dance club vibe, with themed events, lesbian nights and classic dance music parties.

Denver Pride

Often described as the largest LGBTQ+ pride celebration in the Rockies, Denver Pride provides a perfect reason for a summertime visit. Produced by the Center on Colfax, the city’s LGBTQ+ community center, the celebration runs all month in June, with myriad activities throughout. The excitement comes to a head during the final weekend in June, with a massive parade and PrideFest, which features lots of food and clothing vendors as well as multiple stages with musicians, singers and DJs.

It's a good idea to plan for Denver Pride by buying tickets in advance for special events. This year, we especially enjoyed Playhaus, a massive kick-off party at the Fillmore Auditorium with excellent DJs, drag performers and dancers. The following day, we headed to Bubbles and Boas, an open-air brunch festival in beautiful Cheesman Park, complete with food trucks, clothing and gift vendors and a lively drag show. On parade day, we followed the route at a relaxed pace and spent the afternoon enjoying live performers on multiple stages and browsing the food and gift vendors at PrideFest.

Great Hotels

Denver offers a wonderfully diverse range of hotels. On my most recent stay, I enjoyed an especially memorable stay at Urban Cowboy, a boutique hotel set in an 1880s mansion in the heart of queer-popular Capitol Hill. No two rooms are the same in this sixteen-suite property, and the stay felt almost like living in a historic landmark — right down to the eye-catching hand-hammered bathtubs that grace the guest rooms. Urban Cowboy shows its queer friendliness especially well during Denver Pride; its restaurant, Public House — conveniently located a few steps from the parade route — is a great place to stop for a drink and a bite.

We also spent several days at the Thompson Denver, a stylish, contemporary property well located in Denver’s LoDo (Lower Downtown) neighborhood. Excellent service, handsomely designed public areas and beautiful guest rooms with large windows are among my favorite aspects of this property — as are the lovely extras, like free, fresh-baked snacks at the reception desk. Also worth noting is Chez Maggy, the hotel's French brasserie, led by Michelin-starred chef Ludo Lefebvre. The outdoor patio offers a nice spot for dining and drinks, and during Pride Month, the venue hosted a drag brunch; those visiting for next year's Denver Pride may want to check the calendar.

We rounded out our hotel experiences at Le Meridien Denver Downtown, yet another outstanding example of the city’s sophisticated hospitality scene. The crisp, bright design of our oversized guestroom was especially inviting, as was the well-designed lobby area, which has a bar and a modern-design fireplace. Corinne, the lovely onsite restaurant, enticed us with its extensive menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner (the weekend brunch is a must-try), while 54thirty, the rooftop bar, is a memorable place for drinks and snacks — it’s billed as the city’s highest open-air rooftop bar, and it’s hard to beat the view.

Excellent Restaurants

Denver offers an ever-expanding culinary scene, and on each visit, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by just how diverse it is. Among the noteworthy eateries is Champagne Tiger, a queer-owned, French-American diner set in a gorgeous example of mid-century-modern commercial architecture; the menu is both sophisticated and clever (the Caviar Ashtray, for example, is exactly that: caviar served in an ashtray that guests can take home). The venue hosts a Sunday drag brunch, Wednesday piano nights and other happenings.

One of the city’s newest upscale restaurants is also one of its hottest: Dear Emilia, which debuted in January 2026, serves a mouthwatering Italian menu that has quickly gained a devoted following. I especially enjoyed sitting at the chef's counter, where I watched the culinary experts at work as I dug into tasty dishes including lasagna verde, which Denver’s WestWord Magazine named the city’s best lasagna.

Also worth reserving a table is Rougarou, a “shape-shifting” southern restaurant that adds a uniquely creative touch to traditional southern fare, with dishes including shrimp and peas, collard salad with sorghum mustard dressing and koji-cured pork steak. We loved the vibe, the service and the flavors at this decidedly creative space, which opened in 2025.

Unique cuisine is also the draw at Molotov Kitschen + Cocktails, where Chef-owner Bo Porytko has crafted a menu that blends his Ukrainian culinary traditions with elements from elsewhere in Eastern Europe, with delicious results. The thoughtful décor, from cuckoo clocks to vintage-inspired tableware, makes the dining experience even more memorable.
