Ad space in the selfie has arrived as the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) and Fraport have put up large posters in Frankfurt Airport that are designed to attract selfie shooters of several of Germany's most picturesque destinations.
The posters are positioned to greet international travelers as they arrive. The campaign will run for the next six months in the Pier C transit area of Terminal 1. The posters feature images from Germany's 16 federal states.
"Our goal is to position the Germany brand and to convince international transit passengers of the country's rich diversity as a travel destination. Ultimately, we want to whet their appetite to holiday in Germany," said GNTB executive board chairperson Petra Hedorfer.
The scheme fits nicely into the GNTB's larger strategy of leveraging Germany's 38 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2014, under the banner "UNESCO World Heritage - Sustainable cultural and natural tourism."
Passengers can take their photos in front of the huge billboards and post them - using the hashtag #GERnow - directly on the Instagram and Facebook social media networks. Via the QR-code on each poster, travelers can connect to the GNTB landing page, where they can download apps for Germany's Top 100 tourist attractions and Fraport's official FRA Airport App.
"For many passengers from all around the world, Frankfurt Airport is the first point of contact with our country and our culture," said Fraport AG's executive board chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte. "These posters serve as a wonderful invitation for international travelers to discover the many facets of Germany on their next vacation. Additionally, these large-sized photos enhance the attractiveness of our terminal and the airport experience for our passengers."
