There's nothing like a castle to bring to life the imagination of a child - whether they see themselves as knights in shining armor or princesses in need of a prince. And if you're looking for a real life castle to fulfil your child's dreams, Britain has some of the best.

There's one right in the middle of London, or arrange a UK car rental through Auto Europe and drive to Dover, Warwickshire, Maidstone or Cornwall and transport your little ones back to the middle ages for a day.

Auto Europe has put together a list of 5 British castles your kids will love.

The Tower of London

It is easy to forget that this famous London landmark is actually a castle. Your little girl's eyes will sparkle at the sight of the Queen's crown jewels, while boys can discover what it was like to be part of the medieval garrison defending the Tower. Take one of the free family trails, packed with activities and quizzes, to make the most of your visit.

Leeds Castle

Situated in Maidstone, Kent, and not in Leeds as you might think, Leeds Castle has been a Norman stronghold as well as home to six of England's medieval queens. Kids can watch the life of royalty come alive in the state rooms before becoming king and queens of their own castle in the Knights' Realm Playground. There's also a maze and an underground grotto to get lost in.

Warwick Castle

In Warwickshire in the Midlands, not far from Shakespeare's Stratford, the towers and ramparts of Warwick Castle are perfect for little Rapunzels and Robin Hoods. Play a part in the fairytale love story between the brave Guy of Warwick and the beautiful princess Felice in the Princess Tower, or muster up the courage to enter the Castle Dungeon and watch some gruesome tales come alive.

Dover Castle

Perched above the famous white cliffs, Dover Castle is steeped in history from as far back as 1066 up until World War II. Meet medieval royalty in the Great Tower before going underground to explore the Wartime Tunnels and find out how British soldiers were miraculously evacuated from the opposite French shore. There is even an authentic underground wartime hospital where you can follow the life-and-death journey of a wounded WWII pilot.

Tintagel Castle

Picture yourselves as fabled Knights of the Round Table on the spot where the legend of King Arthur was born. The adventure begins when you climb the 148 steps to the dramatic headland … from here hours of exploration await you. There is the Great Hall, built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, and the remains of the dark age settlement where Cornish rulers lived for centuries. Not to mention the beautiful beach with the secret Merlin's Cave that is only exposed when the tide is out.

Whether you choose an economy or a compact car rental, Auto Europe offers amazing London rental car deals which will allow you to explore British heritage at its adventurous best. Your kids will thank you for an unforgettable family holiday when you tour any (or all) of the fabulous UK castles on this list!
