Families have loved the Dominican Republic for many years, due to its easy proximity, stunningly beautiful weather, multitude of activities, safety, and value. Kids will quickly discover the island’s warm hospitality, no matter the resort chosen. In fact, many of the 160 resorts across this magical country have been built with kids and families in mind! And some of the amazing beaches here, like in Punta Cana and La Romana, you’ll find gentle waves and shallow waters, perfect for little ones.

Not all families enjoy frolicking in the surf, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want water-based activities. And the DR has plenty of options, as many resorts here boast multiple pools, slides, waterfalls, lazy rivers, or even on-site water parks.

For parents, the on-site kids’ clubs or teen lounges that are located at some of the resorts are key to a happy vacation, giving the adults some needed quiet time or romantic dinners by themselves. And suites designed for families also give parents space and privacy when they need it. Plus, a wide variety of restaurant options, including buffets, also make it easier to travel with the kids.

Getting outside
What’s a family vacation without some outside adventure? Many families prioritize group activities as a way to build great memories while on vacation, and even sneak in some learning about different cultures to help grow their kids into better world citizens. Some of the DR’s endless options for families include snorkeling, kayaking, catamaran cruises, hiking, horseback riding, ATVs, ziplines, and even cooking classes and wildlife encounters.

Here’s a look at five of the most popular resorts in the country for families:

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana — Families receive complimentary access to the recently expanded Aqua Nick water park, and there are unique accommodations such as Spongebob Squarepants’ Pineapple.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana — This huge resort features 13 pools, and everything from a water park to a trampoline zone, as well as mini-golf, bowling, laser tag, and an arcade.

Dreams Playa Esmeralda Resort & Spa — Itslocation near wildlife areas is popular with families, so they can experience humpback whales during migration season, mangrove kayaking, sea turtle nests, manatees, and a stunning reef.

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada — In addition to its Star Camp for kids, you’ll find tennis, volleyball, beach soccer, archery, basketball, and pickleball on site.

Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana — Here, you’ll discover multiple water slides, racer slides, a lazy river, and some fantastic villa accommodations.
