This is a prickly situation, to be sure.
What people see is the Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, on one side and a powerful entity like the Walt Disney Corporation on the other. The governor wants to uphold his policies; Disney wants to uphold its way of life that it is known for nearly a century.
What you have, in reality, is a childish, petulant governor who is upset that Disney publicly challenged one of his policies.
So in retaliation, the governor stripped Disney of its self-governing status and installed five sympathetic members of his own party to oversee what used to be known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Neither side is right of course; the governor shouldn’t be so vengeful. And Disney probably should not have spoken out. In fact, Disney’s former CEO said he was pressured into saying something.
It’s more convoluted than we thought.
Now comes a new twist.
Apparently, Disney uncovered a clause in the original contract from more than half a century ago, in which the Reedy Creek Improvement District cannot be disbanded until the British monarchy is disbanded. And that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon as the country prepares for another coronation of a royak next month.
But this is far from over.
If you thought the governor was just going to let this go by the wayside, you are sadly mistaken.
There will likely be legal action. And it will have far-reaching tentacles.
Prices could shoot up – as if Disney World isn’t expensive enough already. Political agendas could be ruined, and again, you would be sadly mistaken if you thought the opponents of the governor won’t use this against him, especially if he runs for president.
For now, Disney can revel in the fact that it got one over on the governor and his board. They missed it, plain and simple, and the Internet is laughing at them. Seriously, who would have thought to tie something to the end of the existence of the British monarchy? Only a visionary like Walt Disney himself.
This will only embolden the governor and his power.
They will want to defeat Disney more so than ever.
