Last week, ALG Vacations hosted the “Advisors in Action: Come Back to Give Back” FAM in Jamaica.
Watching nearly 100 travel advisors come together in support of Jamaica, donating over 300 suitcases of goods plus their time and money, was truly special.
We all helped volunteer at schools and an animal shelter in Montego Bay, Jamacia, giving back to the community that so desperately needs aid as it continues to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
It was the first voluntourism efforts for many on the trip, and it left a meaningful impact on all of us as we interacted with locals in the community and heard their stories.
The experience served as a stark reminder how we should we be lending a helping hand every single time we travel.
Whether it’s donating your time and/or your money, it’s important we do our part as travelers to ensure we are helping those who are less fortunate in the places we choose to visit.
It’s their home, so not only should we be respectful in our choices, but we owe it to the residents to give back in some capacity.
Volunteering is a huge step. I’m well aware some people find it uncomfortable and doing hard work while on a vacation is something many actively avoid, which to be fair is completely understandable.
However, giving back is always an option. If you can’t give your time or your efforts, you can certainly give your dollars, particularly if you’re visiting a country that depends on tourism money.
That said, you’ll feel like a much better human when you take that dive into voluntourism.
That feeling you get when you help someone in need and see the joy it brings them is quite powerful.
Imagine if we, especially those of us who work in the travel industry, took the time and effort to volunteer and give back at least once during our trips each year…just think of the amazing things we could accomplish.
