Malta on Film

1/17
From its historic buildings to its pristine Mediterranean beaches, Malta is a destination that was made to be captured on film. The following are 16 shows and movies that used the beautiful country as a backdrop for their scenes.

Games of Thrones

2/17
Scenes from the beloved HBO series were shot in the city of Mdina, St Dominic's Convent in Rabat and the Mhtaleb cliffs. Fort Manoel and the Gardens also played as a backdrop in several crucial scenes. The series is available to stream on Hulu, HBO Now and Amazon Prime.

Gladiator (2000)

3/17
In a movie about Roman gladiators, Rome has to serve as a character in and of itself. Epic shots of Ancient Rome were filmed at Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara and the old port of Vittoriosa. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime, YouTube and iTunes.

Troy (2004)

4/17
Brad Pitt was not the only thing of beauty in this film. Fort Ricasoli served as the city of Troy, while other important scenes were filmed in Melliena, Ghajn Tuffieha Bay and the beautiful island of Comino. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime, YouTube and iTunes

Munich (2005)

5/17
Despite being a historical drama depicting the events of the 1972 Munich Massacre, many scenes were actually filmed in the Republic Square in Valletta and other iconic locations in Rabat and Valletta. Available to stream on: Amazon Prime, YouTube, iTunes

Captain Phillips (2013)

6/17
Another film inspired by true events that happened elsewhere, in this case the Maersk Alabama hijacking in Oman, filming took place in the Grand Harbor in Senglea, the Freeport Terminals in Birzebbuga and Marsaxlokk. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime, YouTube and iTunes.

By the Sea (2015)

7/17
While it could be argued that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt should have just enjoyed their Malta honeymoon rather than make a movie, the film does a great job showcasing the beauty of Mgarr ix-Xini Bay in the island of Gozo. The film is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

13 Hours (2016)

8/17
Michael Bay films are not for everyone, but the man knows how to pick a good filming location. Principal photography took place in both Malta and Morocco, and a large set was built in Attard. The film is available to stream on Hulu, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

Assassin's Creed (2016)

9/17
Based on the much-loved video game, principal photography for the film took place in Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara. The film is available to stream on Hulu, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)

10/17
Yet another movie that was filmed in Malta rather than the location the film is named after, i.e. the island of Montecristo. Filming took place Valletta, Comino Tower, Birgu and Mdina. Viewers familiar with Malta will notice the iconic Azure Window in the background of several scenes. The film is available to stream on Hulu, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

Agora (2009)

11/17
Malta seems to be favored among filmmakers trying to recreate Ancient Rome. This historical drama was filmed in Fort Ricasoli, Marsaxlokk, Valletta, Mdina and Victoria Lines. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime, YouTube and iTunes.

Popeye (1980)

12/17
Not only is this film notable for being the great Robin Williams' first starring role in film as the famous comic character, it is also known for its interesting set pieces, which were made and filmed in Anchor Bay, Mellieha. The set, known as Popeye Village, can still be visited to this day. The film is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

Pinocchio (2002)

13/17
An admittedly odd film, to say the least, Roberto Benigni not only directed the film but can be seen frolicking through the village of Kalkara as the eponymous character himself. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime, YouTube and iTunes.

The Da Vinci Code (2006)

14/17
While a majority of the film takes place in the French Louvre and the U.K., a historical flashback scene depicting the Knights Templar at the Crusades was filmed in Vittoriosa in Gozo. Allegedly, a controversial scene of a wedding between Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene was also filmed in Vittoriosa but did not make the cut. The film is available to stream on Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube.

World War Z (2013)

15/17
Principle photography for this apocalyptic action film took place at Fort St. Elmo in Valletta before moving to Glasgow, Scotland. The film is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

American Assassin (2017)

16/17
This action thriller follows protagonist Mitch Rapp around the world, so filming took place in a variety of locations including London, Rome, Phuket, Birmingham and, of course, Valletta. The film is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

The Promise (2016)

17/17
Malta certainly has a knack for providing the perfect backdrop for historical dramas. In addition to Portugal and Spain, filming took place in East Street, Villa Bologna, the National Library of Malta and the old Fisheries area in Valletta. The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime, YouTube and iTunes.

The Mediterranean Maltese Islands have been the ideal filming location for these famous movies and TV shows.
